About the Nephrology department
The Nephrology department provides a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient service for children with kidney disease, including acute and chronic kidney disease.
There is an active renal replacement therapy programme which includes treatment with chronic peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis and renal transplantation.
Renal unit
The Renal Unit provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment service for children with renal disorders. It is the largest paediatric renal unit in the UK and annually we have approximately 500 admissions to Eagle Ward (the renal ward), 100 admissions to outlying wards, 7000 outpatients, 35 new renal transplants, 70 patients on chronic dialysis.
The unit comprises a 14-bed ward with the Renal Transplant and Dialysis Support Unit closely located. Day cases are also seen on the Medical Day Care and Programmed Investigations Unit.
The unit has special expertise in the investigation and management of children with:
- nephrotic syndrome
- haemolytic-uraemic syndrome
- hypertension
- vasculitis
- tubular disorders
- infants, young children and adolescents with severe chronic kidney disease (dialysis or transplantation)
Collaboration with other departments
Strong working links exist with paediatric urology, rheumatology, radiology and pathology. In addition, there are outreach links with a large number of teaching and district general paediatric departments.
The Renal Unit works very closely with the urological service providing comprehensive management of infants and children with complex nephro-urological disorders.
