Safe and Sustainable review into children’s cardiac services

Preparing for theatre

Great Ormond Street Hospital continues to support the findings of a review into children’s cardiac services, which set out the right principles.

We believe that fewer, larger centres carrying out cardiac surgery will mean better outcomes for patients, with local centres continuing to provide follow up appointments close to the patients’ home.

Great Ormond Street Hospital is the largest centre in the UK for children’s cardiac surgery, and the only paediatric hospital in the UK to offer the full range of National Commissioning Group (NCG) cardiac services (ECMO, bridge to transplant, heart transplant, tracheal services and pulmonary hypertension).

The hospital is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for patients and their families to any new arrangements.

Notes to editors

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is the country’s leading centre for treating sick children, with the widest range of specialists under one roof.

With the UCL Institute of Child Health, we are the largest centre for paediatric research outside the US and play a key role in training children’s health specialists for the future.

Our charity needs to raise £50 million every year to help rebuild and refurbish Great Ormond Street Hospital, buy vital equipment and fund pioneering research. With your help we provide world class care to our very ill children and their families.
