Trust general statement about flu

7 January 2011

We always experience pressure at winter because of seasonal respiratory infections. Across the hospital we are currently operating normally for this time of year. The situation in individual departments can vary from week to week.

Seasonal flu has not been a major issue for our services so far this year, but it is wise to protect your family.  We urge families with vulnerable children to get the safe and effective flu vaccination from their GP. Preventing the spread of germs is the single most effective way to slow the spread of diseases such as swine flu. You should always:

*         wash your hands regularly with soap and water,
*         clean surfaces regularly to get rid of germs,
*         use tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze,
*         place used tissues in a bin as soon as possible.

Notes to editors

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust is the country’s leading centre for treating sick children, with the widest range of specialists under one roof.

With the UCL Institute of Child Health, we are the largest centre for paediatric research outside the US and play a key role in training children’s health specialists for the future.

Our charity needs to raise £50 million every year to help rebuild and refurbish Great Ormond Street Hospital, buy vital equipment and fund pioneering research. With your help we provide world class care to our very ill children and their families.
