Minister tours renal and cardiac

17 September 2010

Health Minister Simon Burns visited Great Ormond Street yesterday, 14 September. He met patients, family and staff on Hippo (the dialysis unit) and saw how dialysis patients receive support with their education during their treatment from our in house school. Patients have to travel here from outside London and he discussed the issues for families that posed. He then toured Cardiac Intensive Care and saw patients being bridged to transplant, that is having their heart function supported on ECMO or through a Berlin Heart device while a donor is found.

In a half an hour session with around 30 front line staff he outlined the challenges ahead for the NHS around the White Paper and the opportunities for families. Staff were urged to respond to the consultations running on the proposals.

Chief Executive Dr Jane Collins said “I always enjoy showing visitors around the hospital but obviously when it can only be useful to GOSH when the visitor is Minister for Health. We’re grateful to the Minister for his time.”
