Conjoined twins statement

8 April 2010

Statements below from consultant paediatric surgeon, Mr Ed Kiely, and the parents of Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf:

"I can confirm that the twins Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf have been separated in a 14 hour operation yesterday (Wednesday 7 April).  The twins are in intensive care and are sedated but stable.  We are pleased with how the operation went."

Mr Edward Kiely, consultant paediatric surgeon, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust

“The sun is shining today for our two little fighters, who have won the battle of their lives! Words cannot express the relief and love we feel for our two boys. We thank God, we thank the surgeons and the gifted team at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and we thank from the bottom of our hearts the Irish nation and everyone who prayed for our beloved twins. We are so proud of the courage and strength that Hassan and Hussein have shown, and they both have made the world a much better place with them in it.”

Angie and Azzedine Benhaffaf, parents of Hassan and Hussein.

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust is the country’s leading centre for treating sick children, with the widest range of specialists under one roof.

With the UCL Institute of Child Health, we are the largest centre for paediatric research outside the US and play a key role in training children’s health specialists for the future.

Our charity needs to raise £50 million every year to help rebuild and refurbish Great Ormond Street Hospital, buy vital equipment and fund pioneering research. With your help we provide world class care to our very ill children and their families.
