  • NICE publishes first guideline to improve safety standards for child sedationA new guideline published today (15 December) will ensure that anxious young NHS patients do not receive ineffective or unsafe sedation drugs ahead of any therapeutic or diagnostic procedure. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has developed this first-ever national guideline to improve NHS care and safety standards within England and Wales for sedating infants, children and teenagers. 15 December 2010

  • GOSH pioneers functional MRI scans for epilepsy patientsGOSH pioneers functional MRI scans for epilepsy patients Great Ormond Street Hosptial is the first to offer epilepsy patients functional Magnetic Resonance Imagin (fMRI) scans. This enables clinicians to see which parts of the brain control which vital functions eg memory, speech. language and movement. This is turn gives the surgeon more information about where in the brain to avoid or operate on in those patients for whom brain surgery is suitable. 30 November 2010

  • New gene therapy hope for one of the most lethal childhood cancersScientists at the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH) have developed a new gene therapy that could have the potential to save the lives of children with a life threatening tumour called neuroblastoma. The technique, which uses novel tumour-homing nanoparticles has proved to be effective in a first stage trial in which researchers successfully targeted the tumours in a mouse model. 17 November 2010
