14 October 2009

The Trust is pleased to have been assessed as ‘good’, as regards its finances.

Regarding quality of services the Trust has been rated ‘fair’.  This relates to failing 1 (one) waiting times target in 1 (one) clinical speciality, spinal surgery.  Apart from this we would have been good.***

Reducing unnecessary waits for families is one of this Trust’s key priorities.  However, waiting times for spinal surgery is a national issue because of shortage of capacity.

We have invested in this service to bring waiting times down.  We have appointed a new spinal surgeon.  We now meet, and expect to meet in future, all waiting time criteria, for this and for other services.

Great Ormond Street Hospital is treating more children than two years ago and seeing them more quickly.

*** This was what we said in October but we have subsequently learned had we passed the waiting times criteria we would have been excellent24/6/10

Notes to editors

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust is the country’s leading centre for treating sick children, with the widest range of specialists under one roof.

With the UCL Institute of Child Health, we are the largest centre for paediatric research outside the US and play a key role in training children’s health specialists for the future.

Our charity needs to raise £50 million every year to help rebuild and refurbish Great Ormond Street Hospital, buy vital equipment and fund pioneering research. With your help we provide world class care to our very ill children and their families.
