Without commenting on an individual case we can say the following about children with complex epilepsy, and the services offered by Great Ormond Street Hospital and within local communities.
“Great Ormond Street Hospital is able to provide a similar high quality of clinical care for patients with complex epilepsy that they would receive in the United States. To clarify, there is nothing available to patients treated there which wouldn’t be available to those treated in the UK. This includes access to specialist diagnostic tests when required.
“Regardless of where an NHS patient lives, their day to day therapy, in cases where the child requires multiple therapies on a regular basis, would always be provided by local services. This includes, for example, speech and language therapy.
“Great Ormond Street Hospital acts as an assessment centre for these patients, we share patient care and offer advice and support to local services wherever it is required. We are aware, in the case of Northern Ireland specifically, that significant recruitment additions have been made to these services.”
