Minister praises staff at fire-damaged hospital

21 October 2008

Today MP Ben Bradshaw, Minister of State for Health, visited patients, families and staff who were affected by the fire in the cardiac wing at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust on Tuesday 21 October.

Swift and effective action by staff evacuated the relevant floors of the hospital, safeguarding human life.

The Minister visited Ladybird Ward, which was evacuated during the fire and is now rehoused in a different part of the hospital, and the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.  The Trust is the largest centre for children with heart or respiratory problems in the UK.

Mr Bradshaw praised the  work being done at the hospital, saying: "Absolutely incredible things are being done here.  In my view it's the best hospital in the world and the dedication of the staff, who are working with tiny babies and parents for who it is a very traumatic experience, is second to none."

He said he believed Great Ormond Street Hospital will continue to be the "best national and international children's hospital", even in the aftermath of the fire, thanks to the work of the staff.
