ICH helps UCL win top marks

18 December 2008

University research is regularly assessed in the Research Assessment Exercise, an independent peer-review exercise which directly determines
government funding.

The UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH) has previously been assessed on a standalone basis and has done very well, getting the top 5*A score in the last exercise conducted in 2001.

It is no longer possible for ICH to enter independently of UCL. However work submitted by ICH to the panel assessing ‘other hospital based clinical sciences’ saw UCL clearly rated as the UK’s highest performing institution in this field.  ICH staff made up about 40% of the UCL submission in this category.

Notes to editors

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust is the country’s leading centre for treating sick children, with the widest range of specialists under one roof.

With the UCL Institute of Child Health, we are the largest centre for paediatric research outside the US and play a key role in training children’s health specialists for the future.

Our charity needs to raise £50 million every year to help rebuild and refurbish Great Ormond Street Hospital, buy vital equipment and fund pioneering research. With your help we provide world class care to our very ill children and their families.
