In 2013 Melissa completed a Master’s degree in Autism Spectrum Conditions and moved to join the team at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Assessing and managing mental health difficulties and associated risk in young people with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Qualifications and training
Melissa began her career in 2004 working in a specialist residential school for children with Autism which captured her interest and led her to pursue a career in this field. Melissa went on to complete her Mental Health Nurse training in 2009, immediately pursuing a career in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services within a Tier 4 adolescent in-patient service. During that time she maintained an interest in working with young people with ASD and developed a specialism in working with the young people who had an ASD and an associated mental health difficulty. In this role Melissa took an avid interest in supporting junior staff to develop and in sharing her knowledge of working with children and young people with ASD.
Melissa has also worked in a London based Youth Offending Service where she was able to provide specialist support and input to the young people with mental health and neuro-developmental difficulties who were known to the team.
Melissa completed her Master’s research looking at how CAMHS clinicians assess risk presented by young people with an ASD and a mental health difficulty and this remains a topic of interest for her.
Melissa is interested in further investigating this area and in developing guidance for CAMHS professionals when assessing risk presented by young people on the Autism Spectrum.
