Joseph Curry

Mr Joseph Curry is a Consultant Neonatal and Paediatric Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

He trained in the South East of England training consortium and was awarded the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons' medal for outstanding performance in the intercollegiate examination prior to taking up his current post in 2003. During his training he performed a national research project aimed at improving the outlook for babies born with serious abdominal wall defects.

Specialisms

His main areas of interest are in gastrointestinal (bowel) surgery and treating children born with abnormalities of the abdominal wall, diaphragm and gastrointestinal tract. Particular areas of expertise are in oesophageal surgery, anti-reflux surgery and lower bowel surgery including children with ano-rectal anomalies, Hirschsprung’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease.

He has developed a practice to particularly help children who have had unsuccessful surgical procedures before. He has special expertise in laparoscopic (key-hole) surgery even in infants as small as 1kg.

Mr Curry is also highly active in training senior trainees in surgery in his NHS practice. He is a member of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons Education and Training committee. He has mentored other consultants in the early part of their careers.

He holds a post-graduate Certificate and Diploma in medical education from the University of London and is currently studying for a masters degree in medical education. He is the specialty lead for neonatal and paediatric surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Research interests

He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and presented over 50 times to national and international conferences. He regularly reviews articles for journals such as the Journal of Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Surgery International and Prenatal Diagnosis.
