A cleft lip is a gap in the lip where the tissues have not joined together properly during development in the womb.

A cleft palate is an opening in the palate (the roof of the mouth) where the tissues have not joined together properly during development in the womb.

Clefts of the lip and palate can occur separately or together. Most cases can be treated surgically when the child is young.
