Robin Ward is where children are treated for infectious diseases and immunological disorders.
Ward
Robin Ward is one of only two paediatric immunology wards in the UK. It is also the infectious diseases isolation unit for the hospital.
The ward has 10 beds (cubicles) which can be used as isolation units. The majority are designed to protect children from catching an infection that may be in the environment or carried by staff or visitors.
Three cubicles have a ‘negative pressured system’ which involves several exchanges of air per hour within the cubicle, and can be used for highly infectious cases (for example measles, varicella).
The whole unit has HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filtered air which filters out airborne infection.
Staff on Robin Ward
Robin Ward is managed by a sister supported by a team of nurses who provide care on a 24-hour cover. There are four immunology consultants and four infectious diseases consultants.
The ward has close links with clinical nurse specialists from immunology, bone marrow transplant (BMT), HIV and infectious diseases. The play specialist and the housekeepers are also key members of the ward team.
The ward is also a training area for pre and post-registration nurses and medical staff.
