Growth rod insertion or lengthening

Scoliosis is a lateral (side to side) curvature of the spine. It can be corrected in an operation under general anaesthetic.

The bones in the affected part of the spine are fused together and held in place with one or two metal rods. Growth rods can be inserted after an initial fusion operation and may need to be lengthened at various times during treatment.
