Please see our admission criteria for information about the diagnoses treated by the Infectious Diseases department at GOSH.
How to refer a patient
For an outpatient appointment
As a tertiary care hospital, all children who attend GOSH must be referred via local hospital consultants, community paediatricians or their GP.
To make a referral to the infectious diseases department please email gos-tr.referrals@nhs.net or fax 020 7813 8310.
Rapid assessment for infectious diseases (RAID) provides rapid access to diagnosis and treatment of children with confirmed or suspected infectious diseases.
Please read the full RAID referral guidelines.
For urgent referrals please contact the GOSH switchboard on 020 7405 9200 and ask for the registrar for infectious diseases (Robin Ward).

Services and facilities available
The Infectious Diseases (ID) department at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) provides clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of unusual and complicated infections, tropical diseases and children with HIV infection and AIDS.
A major part of the service is dedicated to the care of HIV infected children.
There are also specialist clinics for children with tuberculosis and chronic viral hepatitis.
The infectious diseases team also works closely with the microbiology, virology and infection control teams to provide infection-related advice throughout the hospital by way of twice weekly formal ward rounds as well as antibiotic guidelines.
HIV/AIDS
The unit is a specialist centre for children known to be infected with HIV and babies and children who need further investigation and testing for HIV.
Services offered by the HIV team:
-
Testing of babies and children for HIV including pre- and post-test counselling.
-
Full investigations, monitoring and treatment of children with HIV and AIDS.
-
Support to child, family and carers.
-
Support, advice, information and training on paediatric HIV infection.
-
Transitioning of young HIV positive people to adult services.
-
Shared care with local district general hospitals and paediatricians.
-
Provides links with community health services and other support agencies.
Tuberculosis (TB)
The infectious diseases team look after children with complicated and complex TB (e.g. CNS TB, multidrug-resistant TB, mycobacterial infections in immunocompromised children).
There is a twice-monthly clinic dedicated to management of patients with TB run by the infectious diseases consultants and a clinical nurse specialist responsible for tuberculosis.
The infectious diseases consultants also do outreach paediatric TB clinics at the North Middlesex Hospital and University College London Hospital (UCLH).
Chronic hepatitis B and C
Children with Hepatitis B and C are seen in a specialist clinic. A particular focus of the service is the care of viral hepatitis in the context of immunodeficiency.
Periodic fever/vasculitis
The infectious diseases team works closely with the Rheumatology and Nephrology Departments to provide care for patients with periodic fevers and vasculitis. Patients are seen in specialist multi-disciplinary clinics.
Recurrent infections
The infectious diseases team has a major interest in the management and causes of recurrent infections.
Rapid assessment for infectious diseases (RAID)
RAID provides rapid access to diagnosis and treatment for children with confirmed or suspected infectious diseases (ID).
Patients are usually under the care of the local paediatric team and referred to RAID for an infectious diseases opinion.
The patient will return to the care of the referring team, or the ID team at GOSH may become the child’s lead team with shared care provided with the local team.
The service is not intended for those children with more severe illness who require immediate admission to a GOSH inpatient bed or to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) bed.
