Services and facilities available
GOSH has the largest CCC for children in the UK and one of the five largest in Europe. The complex nature of these lifelong disorders requires specialist medical and nursing care.
The CCC specialises in complications of haemophilia and other bleeding disorders, such as the management of inhibitors.
The CCC is the designated hub for the North Thames Paediatric Network but also receives referrals from other parts of South East England and further afield in the UK as well as children from Africa, the Middle East and the rest of Europe.
Our medical consultants are paediatric haematologists with special interests in haemostasis and thrombosis.
The parents and the children themselves are also partners in the care model of haemophilia management.
The GOSH CCC has a full diagnostic repertoire required to accurately diagnose bleeding disorders using relatively small volumes of blood.
These include both coagulation and platelet-based disorders at all ages of childhood, including young infants.
Care at GOSH
The CCC facilities include a stand alone outpatient clinical area and rooms with a resident physiotherapist as well as other members of the team.
Clinic times are Monday to Friday from 8am to 5.30pm and a standard haemophilia review appointment will include a review with the clinical staff, physio and dental team.
The CCC has a large stock of all the factor concentrates required to treat children with these disorders, though treatment for home use is delivered directly to the patients home.
Care at home
The children receive the majority of their treatment at home from a very early age, reducing the number of visits and the time spent in hospital.
Families are visited at home when required by the haemophilia nurse specialists who provide continuity and co-ordination of care for families. They also liaise with GPs, health visitors, community nurses, shared care hospitals and schools.
