Poet in residence, part of the
– Friends of GOSH Creative Residencies Programme
Renal Unit, Easter 2006
Poet
Cherry Smyth visited the Renal Unit during the Easter holidays
2006 to carry out writing workshops with seven patients aged nine
to 18 while they were having dialysis. The workshops looked at
a variety of forms of creative writing from rap to poetry to song
writing. The participants produced a number of written works,
each of which have been beautifully illustrated by Kirsty Barton
graphic designer at LexisNexis® Butterworths and then published
as a book. Posters of each of the poems are on display in the
corridor outside of Cardiac Theatres throughout winter 2006. Copies
of the book can be requested by contacting
Victoria Jones, Arts & Humanities
Manager, or downloaded in PDF format Friends
of GOSH poem posters (PDF, 3.2MB).
The poet in residence project was the first of three such projects
which will take place each year at GOSH, these projects are very
generously funded by the Friends
of GOSH.The project was a big
success and received excellent feedback from participants
and staff.
The poetry programme is a wonderful idea and a great way of keeping
the children creatively active while they are on dialysis. The book is beautifully
set out and so original, and I love the postcards.
- Cyril Chantler, Chairman of the Trust
The books were really lovely and the kids were so proud that they
had done them, they all wanted to show me what they had done, some of them
really made me smile as the poems are a true reflection of their personalities!
- Cecilia McNeice, Senior Renal Staff Nurse, GOSH
What a lovely collection of writing, presented in a great design too
