The Morgan Stanley Clinical Building
The Morgan Stanley Clinical Building will be the second new clinical building to be completed in the redevelopment programme.
The Morgan Stanley Clinical Building is the lynchpin of the GOSH redevelopment strategy with a gross internal floor area of circa 18,500 m2. It is the single largest new construction project within the redevelopment and will provide modern inpatient wards for children with acute conditions and chronic illnesses, state-of-the-art operating theatres and enhanced diagnostic facilities. Construction is planned to start in November 2008 and be completed ready for operational commissioning in late 2011.
The Morgan Stanley Clinical Building has two basement levels (–1 and 0), and 7 upper floors. Restaurant facilities for staff, patients and visitors are provided at ground level (level 2). Diagnostic & Treatment facilities are located at lower ground floor (Level 1) and Level 3 with inpatient beds on Levels 4 -7.
The Trust intends that this building will set a benchmark standard for future NHS hospital design, with a focus on high quality external elevations and interior finishes alongside effective clinical layouts. In addition the design will exceed the government and London Mayor targets for sustainable energy sources and reduced carbon emissions.
Art in the Morgan Stanley Clinical Building
Following the success of Octav Botnar Wing (OBW), the Trust is committed to commissioning a programme of site-specific art throughout the building. All artwork will be of similar quality to OBW but will be conceived to work specifically with the architecture and functions of the Morgan Stanley Clinical Building, this time.

Examples of artwork commissioned for Octav Botnar Wing
Integrating art and design is proven to be beneficial - reducing the clinical look of facilities, aiding healing and creating a relaxed, interesting and interactive environment. It can also be used to make wayfinding easier.
Careful consideration and thought will been given to the placement of artworks and the use of art and design in relation to wayfinding. Artwork will relate to the identities of the bedpools, colour identification of departments and will emphasise the built form of the main public spaces and circulation routes. Temporary exhibitions, sculptural and interactive features will also be integral to the new spaces.
The development of ideas and the commissioning of artwork for the Morgan Stanley Clinical Building will be carried out in a thoroughly consultative manner with our range of stake holders.
