Halloween fun

The spooky season is creeping up on us. We offer a few ideas on making your Halloween party go bump in the night.

Planning a party

Whip your family and friends into action by planning a witches and goblin fancy dress party for friends and family. Organise a special prize for the most scary, original or ghastly costume and plan a whole host of traditional Halloween party games.

Costume preparation

Dress to impress! This is the bit where you can really have some fun. Get the whole family involved in helping to plan and make your costume. Be creative with your use of materials and accessories. Raid the house and use paper mache for masks, tinsel for crowns, buttons etc.

Jack-o-Lanterns

With the lights dimmed, these pumpkin lanterns can create the ideal atmospheric party prop for your Halloween party. They’re also great fun to make, but kids shouldn’t make these without adult supervision.

You will need: a pumpkin, spoon, a permanent marker, a sharp knife and a candle.

  • Cut the top of the pumpkin with a large sharp knife.
  • Use a spoon to scoop out the seeds. Next, draw the eyes, nose, and mouth with the marker.
  • Cut out the face with the small knife.
  • Pop a candle inside the Jack-o-lantern, and watch his beady eyes light up!

Healthy pumpkin

If you're planning on throwing a party why not organise a healthy 'pumpkin themed' menu. This will keep fat and sugar intake to a minimum. You could set your friends the challenge of each cooking a separate pumpkin dish. Hand out recipes to avoid people turning up with the same dish. This will also help cut down on the cooking for your family!

Apple bobbing

Apple bobbing is a great game for a Halloween party, and it's really simple. All you need is a big bucket filled with water and a bag of apples. To play, each person puts their hands behind their back and tries to get an apple out of the bucket using their mouth! It can get a bit messy but is lots of fun!

Ghost story challenge

Ask everyone whose attending the party to arrive with one scary story up their sleeve. Then have a time when you switch off all the lights and everyone exchanges ghost stories.

Visit a haunted house

If a party is off the menu, why not go with a friend or family to visit a haunted house? Or, if you live in southern England and are looking for a scarier option, why not visit the famous London dungeons. There's also bound to be a Halloween bonfire in your local community that you could find out about. Have a spooky Halloween and avoid those wicked witches!
