Squirrel Ward is for children and young people having urology surgery. This is surgery on the bladder, genitals and kidneys. Patients having general surgery can also stay on Squirrel Ward.
Squirrel Ward has 22 beds. There is also an area with eight beds for patients who need extra care.
Both children and teenagers stay on Squirrel Ward.
Staff on the ward
Squirrel Ward is mainly run by our team of nurses, who work closely with the doctors to help you get better.
Other staff who work on the ward include healthcare assistants, a school teacher and a play specialist.

Conditions we treat
Some of the urology conditions we treat on Squirrel Ward include:
- hypospadias
- urethral valve problems
- intersex abnormalities
- urinary incontinence
- bladder exstrophy
- epispadias
Some of the other conditions we treat on Squirrel Ward include:
- gastroscisis
- exomphalos major
- necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)
- malrotation
- neuroblastoma
Facilities for children and young people
Squirrel Ward has a playroom with lots of toys, games and crafts.
There is a play specialist who organises activities and can help you get ready for any procedures you may have in hospital.
You can also use the Centre on the ground floor of the Southwood Building, which has an outdoor area and a dedicated room (the Den) for teenagers.
If you are well enough, you can have lessons at the hospital school, which is on the ground floor of the Southwood Building, next to the Centre.
If you are not well enough to go to school, teachers can also come to Squirrel Ward and give you lessons at the bedside.
