Clinical audit

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) provides support for staff who to measure the care given to our children.

Clinical audit can identify how well we are meeting the needs of patients and families.

What is clinical audit?

The aim of clinical audit is to identify how closely local practice at Great Ormond Street Hospital relates to best practice as described in guidelines, standards, protocols and other sources of evidence based practice.

The Department of Health advisory body, the National Clinical Audit Advisory Group have recently redefined clinical audit as:

"Clinical audit is the quantitative assessment of the quality (principally the effectiveness) of care being provided compared either to agreed, documented evidence-based criteria or to the performance of other providers or commissioners. Its aim is both to stimulate quality improvement interventions and to assess their impact. "

Key aspects of clinical audit are:

  • to measure clinical practice against evidence-based standards

  • systematic method to compare what we are doing with what we think we should be doing

  • that it includes a mechanism for change

  • a means of continuous improvement to develop health care practice

Further advice on the definition and cope of clinical audit can be found here as agreed by the National
Clinical Audit Advisory Group
