There are 28 elected and appointed Councillors on the Members' Council, plus the Chair. Seventeen councillors were elected by patients, families and the public, five by staff and eight were appointed.
Appointed councillors
By law, we are required to have councillors appointed by the following organisations (one from each organisation):
- Camden Primary Care Trust - our local commissioner, to represent the range of NHS commissioners which pay for our services.
- London Borough of Camden - to reflect the interests of the local community.
- The UCL Institute of Child Health - as our partner in research and education, this is a central relationship for us.
In addition, the following organisations each appoint one councillor:
- National Commissioning Group which commissions very specialised services at GOSH.
- Great Ormond Street Hospital School.
- Expert Patients Programme Community Interest Company who provide support for patients and their families to be more closely involved in managing their care.
Staff membership
Staff membership is open to all employees who hold a Great Ormond Street Hospital permanent contract. Staff on fixed term contracts of 12 months or more, and those staff that work with the hospital (such as the fundraising charity Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity); the staff at our school and the social workers on our site; contractors such as cleaners and security; and our volunteers working on site, may also become members if they have been working with the Trust for 12 months or more.
We regret that the legislation prevents some staff with contracts of less than 12 months from joining the staff constituency, but they are able to join the public constituency and have a voice and we will encourage staff representatives to seek their views. We will communicate these issues clearly to all staff at the necessary point to avoid confusion.
Staff representation
All eligible staff will be members unless they choose to opt out. Staff members elect five Councillors to the Members Council.
The role of staff Councillors is to provide a strong staff voice in the statutory roles of the council and to help to develop strategy and direction. Staff Councillors will not replace the well-established negotiation on staff pay and conditions with our Staff Side unions.
