The Members' Council doesn’t run the hospital – that is legally the responsibility of the directors.
We see the council as being vital to involve members directly in our long term vision and planning, as a critical friend and guardian of our values, and it is the best body to supervise public involvement, membership recruitment and activation.
The council has specific powers, including involvement in picking the non-executive directors, ratifying the appointment of the Chief Executive, receiving the accounts and appointing the auditors. We see the Members' Council as a major benefit of our Foundation Trust status and we are committed to developing ways for the Board and council to work together.
The chair of the Members' Council plays a pivotal role as they are also the chair of the Board of Directors.
